GOFL games on Thursday night rained out

The Greater Ottawa Fastball League games scheduled for Thursday night in Micksburg (vs Kars) and in Carp (I4C vs Ottawa Valley As) have been postponed due to the rainy weather.

West Carleton wins A and B titles in Midget league

The West Carleton Midget Boys fastball team #1, made up of players primarly from Carp and Fitzroy, won their A championship house league title over McNab last night.

The WC #2 team, made up primarily of players from Kinburn and Dunrobin, won the B title with a victory over Stittsville.

Stittsville walks off 7-6 win over West Carleton

The Stittsville 56ers won in the bottom of the seventh on Wednesday night in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play, earning at 7-6 win over West Carleton Electric in a back and forth game.

Adam Smith had the pitching win for the 56ers, with one inning of work in relief of Kyle Olson. Jeff Barber (4 innings) took the loss in relief of Steve Cavangah (3 innings) for West Carleton.

WC staked out a 2-0 lead in the first inning and a half. In the first, Kevin Shonfield doubled and scored on Chris Costello's RBI double. In the second inning, Trevor Barton tripled and scored on Neil Murphy's single.

Stittsville answered back with a pair in the bottom of the second. After a walk to Scott Jessiman, John Craig reached on a fielder's choice. Smith then launched a two run shot to left centre to plate two.

A Fitzroy rally in the third with two out put the Electric up by a deuce. Costello singled, then Jeff Cavanagh singled, with both scoring on a double by Barton.

The lead was short-lived however as the 56ers took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third, sending nine men to the plate. Luc D'Entremont lead off with a double and scored on Dan Jessiman's single. After a single by Scott Jessiman, a misplayed grounder hit by John Craig plated Dan. Craig came around to scored on another hit by the invisible hand of Adam Smith.

Stittsville added to their lead in the fifth. Aaron Amo lead off with a double and scored on yet another RBI by Smith, his fourth of the game.

The Electric rallied to tie the game at six in the sixth. Neil Murphy started off with a walk. After a pop up, a pinch hit single by Adam Brown put two runners on. A walk to Andy Barber loaded the bases. A full count single by Shonfield scored two runs to tie things up.

Things got dramatic in the bottom of the seventh as Stittsville rallied for the win. With one out, Amo ripped a triple to the corner in left field. The Electric elected to intentionally walk Smith. The next batter struck out to get two outs. Then, with an 0-2 count, Jamie O'Hare punched a ball up the middle that couldn't be fielded cleanly, allowing Amo to score the game winning run.

West Carleton championship day

West Carleton Softball wrapped up the house league season at several levels this weekend, closing things off with a "Fun Day / Championship Day".

In the Atom (U8) and Mite (U10) levels, each team played two games for a fun day to end the season. Atoms had ten teams while Mites had six.

In Squirt (U12), playoffs came to an end with Caveman's Fitzroy Squirts completing their perfect 14-0 season with a win over Kinburn #2 in the A Final. The Squirt league had seven teams.

At the Peewee Boys (U14) level, there was an upset as the Kinburn Peewee Boys defeated the Fitzroy Peewee Boys to win the title of the five team league.

Peewee Girls wrapped up last week with a five team year end tournament, with West Carleton Peewee Girls #2 winning the championship over West Carleton Peewee Girls #1.

The Bantam / Midget Girls level had their year end tournament this weekend, with a Stittsville team prevailing in the five team event.

Bantam (U16) and Midget (U18) Boys levels continue next week with playoffs.

Kars Juniors at OASA Provincials

The Kars Aces Juniors (listed in the tournament results and schedule as "Ottawa") participated in the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Junior Men's (U21) provincials this weekend in New Dundee.

The Aces has a tough start, facing the New Hamburg Mustangs, team which has seven players from Team Ontario which is going to the Canada Games. The Mustangs won 7-0.

In their second game, Kars lost 3-2 to Chippewa, eliminating them from the double elim format tournament.

Stittsville and Micksburg both win one on Thursday

A doubleheader in Micksburg on Thursday night saw the visiting Stittsville 56ers lose the first game but rebound for a win in game two.

The hometown Twins won the opening game behind the strong pitching of Joran Graham who chucked the shutout. Kyle Olson took the loss for Stittsville.

The second game saw the 56ers scratch out two runs and hold on for the win. Kyle Olson threw again for the visitors and came up with the victory while Corey Costello got the loss for the hometown crew. The game was halted due to lightning midway threw the seventh inning and the subsequent downpour ended things.

Championship Saturday for West Carleton House League Softball

West Carleton Softball will have their annual Championship Day for Squirt (U12) and Peewee (U14) Boys, as well as the Fun Day for Atom (U8) and Mite (U10) in Carp on Friday June 23 and Saturday June 24.

The Fun Day activities are two games for each team, while Championship Day will declare A champs, B champs and C champs for older age groups.

Quyon beats I4C Victory

The Quyon Flyers won at home on the Quebec side of the river on Thursday night over I4C Victory by a score of 7-0 in five innings. Matt Greer had the win for the Flyers, chucking a one-hitter. Steve "Toad" McCord hit a two run shot for Quyon. Shane McNish was tagged with the loss for I4C.

OASA Junior provincials this weekend

The Ontario Amateur Softball Association Junior Men's (U21) provincials will take place this weekend in New Dundee with eight teams participating.

The Kars Aces Juniors from the Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League (listed in the draw as "Ottawa") will be participating in the event.

Kars and West Carleton split doubleheader - with details

In Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Wednesday night in Manotick, the Kars Aces and West Carleton Electric split a doubleheader on a beautiful night for fastpitch softball.

In the first game of the night, the Electric won 4-3 with Steve Cavanagh earning the win and Jeff Barber getting the save in two innings of action. Brad Porter threw well in taking the loss. Jeff Barber had a home run for Fitzroy.

Kars scored in the first when Cory Morrison singled, moved to third on Matt Alkerton's two out single and plated on a wild pitch.

There was a rare sighting in the second inning. Brad Porter singled, then stole second base, according to the official scorer, despite allegations from his own team that it was a passed ball. He was stranded at two.

The Aces got another run in the third. Ian King walked, stole second, moved to third on the errant throw on the steal and scored on Chad Milne's sacrifice fly to centre.

West Carleton got all their runs in the fourth. Jeff Barber lead off with a solo home run. Then Chris Costello doubled and subsequently scored on Jeff Cavanagh's single. After a 5-4-3 double play erased both Cavanagh brothers, Steve Edgerton singled, moved to third on Jon Daley's double and both of them scored on Matt McKay's 2 RBI double to left.

Kars got another run in the fifth when Nick Ellis reached on a fielder's choic and scampered home on Matt Alkerton's triple.

After five innings of work, Steve Cavanagh gave way to Jeff Barber who retired six of the next seven batters for the save.

The night cap saw the home team hold on for a 4-2 win with Luke Severson spinning a gem to get the win. Jeff Barber took the loss and had relief from brother Andy. Nick Ellis had several spectacular plays at shortstop to preserve the win for the Aces.

Kars got on the board with a pair in the third. After two strike outs, Cory Morrison hit an off hand slicing triple to left field. He scored on Ian King's infield hit. After King stole second, Nick Ellis hit a blooper to score him.

The Aces added another run in the fourth. Chad Milne reached on an error, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Brad Porter's second single of the night.

After Severson kept the Electric off balance for five innings, the visitors finally got a run in the sixth. Jeff Barber singled to start, followed by a Chris Costello single. Jeff Cavanagh's fielder's choice erased Barber at third. Jon Daley then hit a ball hard that looked like a possible double play, but a miscue allowed Costello to score and make it 3-1.

Kars responded with a run in their half of the sixth. Milne made it to second on a misplayed fly ball, got to third on a wild pitch and scored on Severson's squeeze bunt to put the Aces up 4-2.

It looked like the Electric might stage a comeback in the seventh. After the first two batters went down on strikes, the bats started going. Andy Barber tripled, followed by a Kevin Shonfield triple to halve the score. Jeff Barber then got walked putting runners on the corners. Costello then drove a ball hard up the middle, which looked like a sure hit, only to be robbed by shortstop Ellis whose diving stab and subsequent flip to second base ended the game for a 4-2 Kars win.

Fitzroy visits Micksburg

West Carleton made the drive up to Micksburg on Thursday night with uncertainty in the forecast as rain was expected throughout the evening. The Bantam Twins faced off against the Fitzroy Bantams before the GOFL game with the Twins prevailing 15-4 (WP John Enright, Joe Mick LP Josh Ottens, Owen Brown).

The balls were constantly being sent to the towels tonight with the constant rain and wet grass. But it turned into a pitching duel with Andy Barber toeing the slab for the 'Trics and the Twins countering with Joran Graham.

Fitzroy threatened in the first with Andy Barber hitting a single, and then Shonfield reaching on an attempted sac bunt. Graham would escape the threat with a ground out and two K’s.

Both pitchers sat in a rhythm from there on. Graham would strike out 8 consecutive batters after the first two hitters of the game reached.

In the fourth the Twins would threaten. Corey Costello led off with a single which was followed by two walks. Bases loaded, nobody out, Barber was able to get a fielder’s choice at the plate and then strike out the next two to keep the game deadlocked at 0’s.

A memorable fastball moment in the top of five as fifteen year old Matt Rorwick got his first GOFL at bat and hit for the 'Trics.

The sixth inning came with some controversy. Scott Conroy hit a fly ball just over the left fielder's head [Editor's note - yeah, that was me that missed it] and was able to reach third. The bases would be loaded again with nobody out for Micksburg. Chad Costello was intentionally put on and Quinton Rook also drew a walk. Jamey Mick chopped a ball up the middle which was played by the shortstop Shonfield which resulted in an attempted tag of the runner going to third, touching second, and a throw to first for the triple play. He was able to get the tag and the throw to first but the umpires left the runner on second after protest and discussion coming from both teams. Since it was ruled only a double play, Conroy scored to break the tie in the midst of all that and give the Twins a 1-0 lead.

Steve Cavanagh would single to lead off the seventh but Graham would shut it down.

Both teams were happy to get out of the rain. That being said, there is never a bad night for fastball.

Three games played on rainy Thursday UPDATED

Despite the rainy weather on Thursday night, the Greater Ottawa Fastball League managed to get three games in the books.

Micksburg Twins 1 West Carleton Electric 0

Following a bantam boys game as part of a doubleheader (Micksburg 15 West Carleton 4) the men's teams took to the field with the home team prevailing 1-0. Joran Graham got the shutout win, while Andy Barber took the loss. The game was scoreless through six, when the Twins scored a run on a bases loaded double play with none out. This game featured the debut of 14 year old Fitzroy Junior in his first GOFL game.

Quyon Flyers 6 Kars Aces 4

Tied going into the bottom of the seventh, this game saw Nick Armitage hit a two run walk off homer to lead the hometown Flyers to the victory. Trevor Lahey had the win on the slab while Cory Alkerton took the loss. Ian King had a homer for the Aces.

Ottawa Valley As 3 Stittsville 56ers 3

In Carp, the Ottawa Valley As and Stittsville 56ers battled to a 3-3 tie. Ben Broek chucked for the As while Luc D'Entremont had the ball for the 56ers.

New League: Men's Rec Fastball making a come back in the Upper Valley

Jamey Mick announced on Twitter today that a new long-rumoured men's recreational fastball league will be coming to Micksburg this year, starting on June 26.

The Flyers won 8-2 at the Grove in Stittsville over the 56ers. Matt Greer had a three run homer from Quyon. Greer had the win on the slab while Luc D'Entremont took the loss.

Micksburg Twins 6 I4C Victory 0

The first game of the doubleheader in Manotick saw the Micksburg Twins blank I4C Victory 6-0. Joran Graham had the win. Shane McNish had the loss and saw relief from Neil Cooke.

Kars Aces 9 Micksburg Twins 7

The second half of the double dip saw a high scoring affair with the Kars Aces defeating the Twins 9-7. Cory Alkerton and Brad Porter threw for the home team while Matt McIntrye, Corey Costello and Graham threw for the visitors.

Minor ball tournament results

There were two minor softball tournaments in eastern Ontario this past Saturday.

Alice & Fraser (near Pembroke) had a Squirt and Peewee event. In the Squirt category which had five teams, Micksburg were the winners, while on the Peewee side which had six teams, Greely came out on top. The Kinburn Peewees from the West Carleton house league participated in the tourney.

Napanee held their annual tournament on Saturday as well. There were four mites teams, six squirt teams and six peewee teams. In the mites side it was a round robin, with Springbrook Royals finishing 3-0. The squirt event saw Napanee Express going undefeated and winning in the A Final over Bridgenorth Bulldogs. For Peewees, the Westport Storm won all their games, including beating Napanee in the A Final. West Carleton had teams entered in both mites and squirts at this tourney.

Glen Cairn Men's Fastball tournament

The Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League tournament was held this past weekend in Carp with 12 teams participating.

Anderson Automotive are Harbour Ball Tournament champs

The Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball tournament wrapped up on Sunday, with Anderson Automotive from the FHMFL winning the A championship with a 1-0 win over the Shawville league representatives in a very well played game of men's recreational fastpitch softball. Adam Rueckwald and Shawn Ryan threw for Anderson's while veteran chucker Earl Kearns threw for Shawville with relief from James O'Brien.

In the B championship, Al's Corner Store won 8-7 in eight innings over Murphy's Plumbing in what some are calling a controversial game. Danny Armstrong and Freddy Ross threw for Al's while Mitch Taylor was on the slab for Murphy's.

Twelve teams participated during a beautiful weekend, which saw the eight Fitzroy league teams welcome four teams from other leagues from Carp (2), Shawville, and Bancroft. In other news, the bar at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre sold out of Bud Light during the weekend and thanks the teams for their support of the Community Association.

Micksburg and Quyon tie at two

The Quyon Flyers came back from a two-run deficit to tie the Micksburg Twins at 2-2 up in the 'Burg in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Thursday.

Joran Graham threw for Micksburg while Drew Hathway and Trevor Lahey split pitching duties for Quyon.

GOFL Wednesday night round up

At the Grove on Wednesday night, the Ottawa Valley As defeated the Stittsville 56ers 5-4. Adam Rueckwald got the win while Luc D'Entremont took the loss. Clayton Vance had a homer for the As.

In Manotick, the Kars Aces and I4C Victory got into a slugfest, with the Aces prevailing 15-11. Cory Alkerton had the win with relief from Luke Severson. Shane McNish took the loss and Neil Cooke saw action in relief.

The Glen tournament this weekend to feature 12 teams

The Glen Cairn Men's Fastball League tournament will have 12 teams this year, playing June 9 to 11 at the Carp Fairgrounds diamonds.

The nine league teams will participate, with three extra teams including the Osgoode Midgets, The Rogues from the eight-team Blackburn Men's Fastball League and a team from the four-team Ashton League.

Harbour Ball Men's Tournament

The Fitzroy Harbour Men's Fastball League (affectionately known as "Harbour Ball") will be hosting their annual mid-season tournament this weekend, June 9-11. For the first time in a long time (maybe ever) the tournament will feature teams from outside competing with the eight FHFML teams, representing the Carp league (two teams), the Shawville league (one team) and the Bancroft league (one team).

Kars at West Carleton postponed

The Kars Aces at West Carleton Electric game scheduled for tonight in Fitzroy had to be postponed due to wet field conditions.

GOFL Week #5

Week 5 of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League has three games on tap.

Tuesday in Fitzroy Harbour sees the Kars Aces (0-1) in to play West Carleton Electric (2-1).

The Wednesday nighter at the Grove has the Stittsville 56ers (1-0-1) hosting the Ottawa Valley As (0-2).

Thursday night the Quyon Flyers (1-1) are in to play the Micksburg Twins (1-0).

All games this week start at 8:30 pm.

Micksburg defeats Quyon 8-0

Micksburg Twins headed over to Quyon to kick off their season on Thursday while Quyon had started their season the night before.

Joran Graham had the ball for the Twins and Matt Greer countered for the home team. First pitch was at 9 pm as part of a doubleheader with the local women's team. The Quyon women drew to a 4-4 tie with the Carp Cubs which started at 7 pm.

The Twins struck first with two out, Joran Graham hit his first homerun of the season over the left field fence.

Matt Greer walked with two out in the first inning and would advance on a passed ball. Graham was able to escape the threat.

Micksburg continued in the second inning with Scott Conroy clearing the fence following Quinton Rook’s single. That was followed up with a walk for Paul Griffith and a single for Matt Mcintyre. Graham helped his cause with a 2RBI single to bring home Griffith and McIntyre.

The Twins thrower found a groove and continue to shut down the Flyers. Micksburg added 3 runs in the top of the fifth and that would be all to make the final 8-0 Twins.

West Carleton wins 6-0 over Valley As

West Carleton Electric won 6-0 over the Ottawa Valley As in Greater Ottawa Fastball League play on Thursday night in Carp.

Andy Barber had the win allowing only one walk and two hits. Ben Broek took the loss and had relief from Adam Rueckwald.

Fitzroy scored a run in the first when Kevin Shonfield singled and was brought home on a Chris Costello single.

WC put up four runs in the second frame. Steve Cavanagh singled, Jon Daley walked and Andy Barber walked to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Jeff Barber's double drove in two. Then, Costello drove in another two runs with a single to make it 5-0 for West Carleton.

The 'Trics added a run in the fourth when Jeff Barber, who had walked, scored all the way from first on a throwing error when Costello put the ball in play in the infield.

The Micksburg Twins won their first game of the Greater Ottawa Fastball League season on the road in convincing fashion with a 8-0 victory over the Quyon Flyers. Joran Graham had the win for the Twins and hit a home run. Scott Conroy also put one out for Micksburg. Matt Greer took the loss for Quyon.

West Carleton Electric 6 Ottawa Valley As 0

The West Carleton Electric defeated the Valley As 6-0 in Carp, with Andy Barber throwing a very efficient game, allowing only two hits and one walk over seven innings. Chris Costello had three RBIs, while Jeff Barber drove in two. Ben Broek took the loss with relief from Adam Rueckwald.

10th Annual Gil Read Memorial Tournament

The 10th Annual Gil Read Memorial Men’s Fastpitch tournament will be held once again at the Carp Fairgrounds in Carp, Ontario the weekend of July 28th, 29th and 30th, 2017.

This is an Open class tournament without restriction. Entry fee and prize money to be confirmed soon.

The tournament committee plans on making the 10th edition of the event the best ever. Fantastic beer garden with the best burgers around, and good crowds on hand, all in support of the Gil Read Memorial Foundation.

GOFL Wednesday night round up

There were two games that were played in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League on Wednesday night.

Stittsville 56ers 5 I4C Victory 5
In Stittsville, the 56ers and I4C Victory played to a 5-5 draw. Stittsville was down 4-1, clawed back to take a 5-4 lead going into the seventh, but gave up a tying run in the final frame. Kyle Olson threw for Stittsville while Neil Cooke had the ball for I4C.

Quyon Flyers 2 Kars Aces 0
In Manotick it was an old fashioned pitchers' duel as the Kars Aces and Quyon Flyers were scoreless through six innings. The Flyers scored two unearned in the top of the seventh and prevailed 2-0. Trevor Lahey had the win while Luke Severson was tagged with the loss.
