Micksburg Twins win 2016 GOFL playoff title

The Micksburg Twins won the Greater Ottawa Fastball League title on Thursday night with a 3-2 win over the visting Kars Aces to go undefeated in the playoffs.

There were about 200 in attendance at the park in Micksburg (attendance count by the Caveman) on a beautiful late September night.

Joran Graham had the win with five innings of work allowing five hits and striking out 11. Corey Costello got the save, chucking hitless ball in the sixth and seventh and fanning five.

Brad Porter threw very well in taking the loss for Kars allowing only three hits and striking out 12.

Kars got on the board in the top of the first inning. Brad Pender hit a slap infield single with one out. Pender stole second and took third on an overthrow. He scored on Cory Morrison's double to centrefield.

Micksburg got on the board in the bottom of the opening frame. Graham walked with two out and Corey Costello hit a home run to left centre much to the delight of the local crowd, making it 2-1 for the home team.

Both teams went three up three down in the second inning.

Ian King lead off with a walk in the top of the third for Kars. Kristian Knapp then drove a ball off the top of the fence to right. King held up making sure the ball wasn't caught. With Knapp close on his tail, King tried to score but was thrown out at home. Knapp advanced to third on the throw. A line drive to centre by Brad Pender was a sac fly to score Knapp and tie the game at 2-2.

Graham got on base with two out for Micksburg in the third on a misplayed grounder. However a hard hit ball right at Porter allowed him to get out of the inning unscathed.

Chad Milne got a two out single for Kars in the fourth but was stranded after the next batter struck out.

Porter struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth to keep things knotted at two.

In the top of the fifth, Will Dunk bunted for a single to lead off. After a strike out, Knapp hit a hard drive to short, but Andrew McIntyre was able to glove it in the air and double off Dunk to end the inning.

Quinton Rook walked to start the bottom of the fifth for the Twins. Rook stole second. After a strike out, McIntyre had a great at bat and drove a ball into left to score Rook and give Micksburg the 3-2 lead. Porter induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Corey Costello came in to relieve Graham in the sixth and struck out two. Morrison got on due to a misplayed fly to left, then another strikeout.

Graham lead off the sixth for Micksburg with a single, but Porter got two strikeouts and a pop up to get out of it.

Costello sealed the win in the top of the seventh with two strike outs and a pop up to end the game, and claim the 2016 GOFL Playoff championship for the Micksburg Twins.
