WC Electric wins game one 8-0 over Blitz

West Carleton Electric took the first game of their best-of-five by a score of 8-0 over Manotick Taylor's Blitz in GOFL play on Tuesday night in Fitzroy.

When a torrential downpour came through the Harbour at about 7:15, it look questionable if the game would be played. However, Piccolo Pete, ace groundskeeper, along with his helpers, went to work to ensure that the "upper" diamond was playable and the game was able to begin around 8:20 or so.

Andy Barber earned the win for Fitzroy while Jamie Blakely took the loss and had relief from Derick Bulley.

It looked like the Blitz would score the game's first runs in the top of the second frame. Tony Searle, Jon Ferguson and Derek Martin loaded the bases on consecutive singles. The next batter stroked a hard grounder to 'Trics 3rd baseman Dave Bahm who alertly touched third and threw a perfect dart home to Derek Barber for the tag and the double play. After a subsequent strike out, the game remained scoreless.

The score stayed 0-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the home team took a big lead. Bahm lead off with a walk and was moved to second on a Michael Cavanagh sacrifice bunt, scoring on a Charlie Ross RBI single up the middle. Jon Daley then reached on an infield single. Andy Barber's three run homer made it 4-0. This prompted a pitching change by the Blitz, replacing Blakely with Bulley. Steve Cavanagh was the first batter and reached on an error. SCav scored on a Jeff Barber double to right to make it 5-0 after four.

Manotick had another good opportunity in the sixth. Bulley doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. Searle's deep fly to centre was a tag up opportunity, but Jeff Barber's perfect throw to the plate made for a double play.

West Carleton ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Steve Cavanagh reached on an error and once again for the second time in the game scored from first base - this time on Derek Barber's double. A home run by Jeff Cavanagh later in the frame made it 8-0 and ended the game by the mercy rule.

For his pitching performance and home run, Andy Barber earns the Caveman's Choice as player of the game.
