Fishing with the Caveman

On Sunday, I decided to take Fitzroy Junior and the Caveman fishing. One of the benefits of living in Fitzroy is the proximity to the water. We can walk to go fishing and we have a choice between the Ottawa River and the mighty Carp River and we regularly take advantage.

This weekend we decided to go to the Ottawa, and go over to "Uncle Bert's", just a short piece away from our house. He's the uncle of a friend of mine and we often go catch rock bass, sunfish, perch and the odd smallmouth bass down by his place. It's a nice spot, just between the public boat launch and the beach at the Provincial Park..

Recently, the Caveman finally learned how to ride a two wheeler without training wheels. He was a little late finally 'getting it' but now that he can do it, he loves his freedom and always wants to ride. So Caveman and Fitzroy Junior head out on the bicycles and I'm a few yards behind, pulling the wagon with our 'supplies' (juice boxes, worms, lawn chairs, tackle boxes, etc).

As we near Uncle Bert's place, we get closer to a the large drop off to the river. It's a gravel pathway about one lane wide, probably 70 feet long on about a 45 degree angle down to the water.

We are getting closer and the Caveman is still pedalling away furiously. Then I notice he's not braking. He's about 20 yards in front of me - and he's not putting on the brakes as he's starts down the hill. Fitzroy Junior is cautiously easing down the hill but not Caveman. I scream "BRAKE!" and start running frantically, but he's cruising down the hill. He must be doing about 25 miles an hour and I drop all the stuff and scream "BRAKE! BRAKE! BRAKE!" but to no avail. He's started to panic and he's going top speed.

The Caveman whips down the hill, not even touching the brake, hits a big rock at the bottom and flies - and I mean literally airborne - up in the air, landing about 10 feet away SPLASH in the water. I am running as fast as I can, frantic, worried about broken bones.

Thankfully nothing was hurt but his pride but he was soaked to the skin. And he was MAD. Crying, but not tears of pain, but tears of rage. Furious with his bike, with me, the fact that he's soaked, he thinks the fishing trip is over, Mommy is going to be mad, his brother better not laugh and don't tell anyone Daddy. I was so happy he wasn't hurt and was trying not to laugh but didn't dare chuckle. We went back to our place got him dry clothes and went back to fish.

Fitzroy Junior mentioned that is a 'bad luck' spot for the Caveman as it wasn't far from a another soaker this past winter.

Later, I was telling a few people what happened and he said "Do you have to tell EVERYONE, Daddy?" No son, not everyone...but the blog readers would probably like to know. So if you see him at the Gil Read this weekend, don't mention it, OK?

We only get a small taste. You have to save all these stories and write a book. Your writing style is so good. I could visualize this whole story as it happened as if I were watching a TV show.
